Left part, the radiations directly break the bonding between the base pairs in genetic material (DNA or RNA) causing the reproductive death of cells. Right part, the indirect damage to DNA (and other cellular components) is caused by the free radicals ad reactive oxygen species generated by the breakage of water molecules.
