Long-term PM2.5 exposure enhances pneumococcal load in the lung. a Mice were intratracheally (i.t.) administered PM2.5 twice weekly for three weeks (for a total of 200 μg), and were infected with pneumococcus (1 × 108) via intranasal (i.n.) instillation. Mice were euthanized 48 h post-infection, and their BALF harvested for (b) bacterial load and (c) pneumococcal genomic DNA copy number determination. Horizontal lines indicate the mean value in each treatment group
