OMV-based and related approaches to vaccination against A. baumannii. Four immunization strategies have been tested in preclinical models of sepsis and pneumonia: (1) Outer Membrane Vesicles (OMV) (70–73); (2) Outer Membrane Complex (OMC) (74, 75); (3) Whole cells (76, 77); (4) LPS-adjuvanted Omp (78). Comparison of vaccines reveals higher potency of LPS-containing vaccines. Notably, the vaccine response is characterized by antibody induction and reduced pro-inflammatory responses after challenge, next to improved survival and lower bacterial burden post-infection.
