The apical region of the cell includes the apical microvilli (region indicated by vertical white line). These microvilli interdigitate with the tips of photoreceptor outer segments. The actual boundary between the actin-rich apical domain and the cell body (which contains microtubules throughout) corresponds to the level of the junctional complexes and a circumferential ring of actin filaments, and so is slightly more basal than the base of the microvilli (Jiang et al., 2015).
