The structure of HERVs. Full-length HERVs comprise gag, pol, env and 5ʹ and 3ʹ LTR. Solo-LTRs are generated by non-allelic homologous recombination between the 5ʹ and 3ʹ LTRs. The majority of HERVs reside in human genomic DNA as solo-LTRs.
