Viral replication process of alphaherpesviruses. (1) The virus enters the host cell through membrane fusion. (2) Viral proteins transport the viral nucleocapsid to the nuclear pore. (3) After the viral DNA enters the nucleus, the viral genome is transcribed, and replication begins. (4) The viral capsid is formed and subsequently packaged with nucleic acid. (5) Nuclear export, also known as the primary envelopment and de-envelopment, occurs. (6) The assembly of tegument on capsids occurs predominantly in the cytoplasm following nuclear egress. (7) Secondary envelopment, which enables the virus to reach maturity, occurs. (8) The mature virus is released from the cell.
