Protective effects of elamipretide on mitochondrial function and morphology in the hippocampus in aged mice after surgery. Elamipretide (5 mg/kg) or normal saline (vehicle) was intraperitoneally administered to mice 30 min before isoflurane anesthesia and once daily for three consecutive days thereafter. The adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production (A), mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) levels (B), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation (C) were determined with fresh hippocampal tissue homogenates obtained on postoperative day 4.
