The ESP is an electro-mechanical robot that can autonomously filter and preserve samples. (A) About the size of a 50-gal barrel, the ESP carries 132 ‘pucks’ (inset), each designed to hold 25 mm filters. (B) The ESP installed in a USGS streamgage station. (C) Streamgage station showing tubing run (white pipe) that contained pump and tubing to deliver stream water to the ESP.
