Hypothetical model of eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF)3a regulation of DNA repair protein synthesis relationship with DNA damage resistance and tumorigenesis. Binding of eIF3a to 5′-untranslated regions (5′-UTRs) of mRNAs encoding DNA damage repair proteins inhibits translation and synthesis of DNA repair proteins, leading to sensitization of cancer cells to DNA-damaging treatments and susceptibility of normal cells to DNA-damaging carcinogens.
