Schematic representation of BMI1 function. Mitochondrial BMI1 inhibits ROS generation through maintaining bioenergetics homeostasis in cells, thus preventing DNA damage, apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. On the other hand, nuclear BMI1 transcriptionally represses p16 and p19 expression and prevents cell cycle arrest.
