Figure 1.

Phylogenetic relationships of selected coronaviruses of medical and veterinary importance. Human SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 are closely related to numerous bat and pangolin coronaviruses in a viral genetic grouping called sarbecoviruses, which contains many other viruses very closely related to SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. These viruses belong to the order Nidovirales, family Coronaviridae, subfamily Coronavirinae and the four genera Alphacoronavirus, Betacoronavirus, Gammacoronavirus, and Deltacoronavirus. The betacoronaviruses are comprised of two subgenera, Sarbecovirus and Merbecovirus. The former include SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2; the latter includes Middle East respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Image created by Sebastian M.
