Pathogenesis of photoreceptor degeneration associated with decreased chromatin accessibility. In photosensitive dKO mice and humans that develop AMD, stress-induced cytotoxic by-product accumulation drives global reduction in chromatin accessibility and downregulation of transcription factors (TFs), resulting in an altered transcriptome that culminates in photoreceptor cell death and reactive inflammation.
