Schematic of NPZZ food-web. Light and dissolved inorganic nutrient (N) supports the primary producer Phyto, and thence consumers Zoo1 and Zoo2. Wastes and corpses are recycled (black arrows). Consumers can cannibalize, as indicated. A low rate of mixing in and out (red arrows, akin to a chemostat) introduces dissolved inorganic nitrogen (N, from ExtN) and removes some residual DIN and biomass.
