Schematic representation of the viral envelope. The envelope is a lipid bilayer membrane of thickness d, consisting of lipids and membrane (M) proteins. It has two surface areas: one facing outside the virion, Aout, and one inside the virion, Ain. The total area taken by M proteins, on both sides of the membrane, is AM. The average area covered by a lipid molecule is α.
