Insufficient protein and fat in the diet can reduce the effectiveness of the immune response, leading to improper control of intestinal infection and a loss of a healthy diverse microbiome. Together malnutrition, chronic infection and microbiome dysbiosis lead to intestinal inflammation, reduced epithelial surface area and malabsorption exacerbating the effects of malnutrition.
