A ship pattern made of amine and methacrylate-functionalized cages was printed between two layers of plain cages only functionalized with methacrylate ligands and forming a bottle shape (a). In the resulting part (b), the “ship in a bottle” is invisible. After immersion in a Cy5-NHS solution, however, the dye penetrates the structure and bind selectively to the amine groups, revealing the ship after additional washing (c).
