a100 μL of aqueous drug (except Nile red) solutions were mixed stepwise with 50 μL of PPSU20 solution (25 mg mL−1 in DMSO), followed by one-time quick hydration using 400 μL of water. Nile red was loaded using its DMSO solution.

bGFP = Recombinant A. victoria GFP protein. Dextran (Mw = 4000), Albumin, RNA, and DNA are conjugated with FITC.

cEncapsulation efficiency is defined as the ratio of the number of molecules in the assemblies to the total amount applied in the formulation. The encapsulation efficiencies were calculated by fluorescence measurements.

dGFP has no detectable fluorescence after encapsulation.
