Once steric hindrance has caused kinase detachment from the membrane bound FERM domain (state 1; see schematic in Fig 9C of the main manuscript), the kinase rotates by ~ 90° (via state 2 to state 3) to allow the basic residues K621/K627 (cyan, side chains shown in space fill) in the kinase domain to interact with the PI(4,5)P2 membrane, as seen in the cryo‐EM structure (state 3). Membrane interacting KAKTLRK residues in the FERM domain are colored in red and side chains shown in space fill.
