The effect of PEGs with different molecular weights on the shrinkage of PT-induced mitoplasts. Mitochondrial swelling was induced by microperfusion with 2 mM Ca2+. Shrinkage was performed as described in Fig. 5. PEG 400 did not lead to mitoplast shrinkage, indicating permeability of the inner mitochondrial membrane to the molecules of 400 D molecular weight after PT activation with calcium. PEG 2000 (2,000 D) led to mitoplast shrinkage. The experiment confirmed the presence of the classical PTP channel with molecular cutoff ∼1.5 kD. V, volume.
