Four simulated patients at different values of lung resistance (R) and compliance (C). Each patient was simulated using pressure control = 10 cm H2O + PEEP 5 cm H2O, breathing frequency = 20 breaths/min, and an inspiratory:expiratory ratio = 1:2. Modeling results show that increased compliance causes increased end-inspiratory and end-expiratory volumes. Increased resistance delays filling, and an increased time constant (τ = RC) could result in auto-PEEP.
