The upper panel shows the linear relationship between better-ear pure tone average (BEPTA) and oral language ability at three values of aided better-ear speech intelligibility indices (BESII) representing the 16th, 50th, and 84th percentiles of aided BESII. The slopes shown represent the predicted effect of BEPTA conditioned on aided BESII. The lower panel plots these conditional slope values across levels of aided BESII values and the 95% confidence intervals. The vertical lines at 0.71 aided BESII and 0.93 aided BESII identify regions where the predicted effect falls below the 95% confidence interval, is within these intervals or is greater than 0. ULCI = upper-level confidence interval, LLCI = lower level confidence interval.
