Role of miR-24 in cancer initiation and progression. MiR-24 functioned as a tumor suppressor or an onco-miR, in different cancer types, even in the same cancer type, by targeting different targets. By targeting specific targets, miR-24 could suppress or inhibit cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, autophagy, cell cycle, and cell apoptosis. The pink ellipse means the protein in it functions as an onco-protein, and the blue ellipse means the protein in it functions as a tumor suppressor. p27Kip1, a key protein in regulating cell cycle; FBXW7, F-box and WD repeat domain containing 7, a substrate-recognition subunit of a ubiquitin ligase complex; menin, the protein product of the MEN1 gene, a ubiquitously expressed protein that lacks homology with other protein families; DEDD, Asp-Glu-Asp-Asp domain, a death effector domain-containing protein; CARM3, CARD-containing MAGUK protein 3, a scaffold protein known to activate NF-κB pathway; FGFR3, fibroblast growth factor receptor 3; XIAP, X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein; FSCN1, fascin actin-bundling protein 1, a protein encoded by an actin-bundling protein, FSCN1, which is involved in formation of actin-based structures that contribute to cell migration.
