Changes in VEGF in the retinas of control mice, mice with diabetes, and AFL-treated mice with diabetes. (A) Representative images of western blots for CTL mice (n=9), mice with diabetes (DM, n=7), and AFL-treated mice with diabetes (+AFL, DM-AFL; n=8). (B) Both VEGF dimers and monomers were significantly increased in mice with diabetes compared with CTL mice. AFL treatment significantly decreased VEGF level, mainly in dimers (*p<0.05). (C) In retinal cross sections, VEGF upregulation was strongly observed in the GCL and INL regions, where superficial and deep capillary plexuses exist. VEGF expression was not observed in the avascular ONL. This change was attenuated by AFL treatment. Original magnification: ×400; scale bar: 100 µm.
