Function of alpha and gamma MNs. MNs can be divided into two groups: larger α-MNs and smaller γ-MNs. α-MNs innervate skeletal muscles, and their activity generates muscle tension and joint movements; γ-MNs innervate intrafusal fibers of muscle spindles, and their activity increases the group Ia and II afferent discharges (i.e., increases the sensitivity of muscle spindles [38]).
