Respiratory activity rates in states 2–4 were defined as the number of ng-O atoms consumed by the mitochondria per minute per mg of protein. The respiratory control index (RCI) was calculated as the ratio of Vst.3 to Vst.4. * p < 0.05 indicates a significant difference in the protein level relative to the control (group 1). # p < 0.05 compared with rat heart mitochondria (RHM) isolated from ISO-injected rats (group 3). The statistical significance of the differences between the pairs of mean values was evaluated using an ANOVA type 2 (Student–Newman–Keuls) test.
