Published studies which were funded by, or declared an element of funding by, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) (excluding reviews) were retrieved from the PubMed database, using search terms defined in the methods, for models of three types of cancer. As an initial, broad measure of assessing impact, the PubMed filter for clinical trials (Article Type) was applied to determine the number of clinical trials associated with particular publications.
