(a) General approach. A fluorescent molecule is derivatized into quenched molecules though chemical synthesis. Each metal-quenching moiety match generates fluorescence. (b) This work. One quenched molecule is screened against a combinatorial library of metal–ligand complexes. A specific metal generates fluorescence only in the presence of a specific ligand.
