Recently Originated Genes Are Infrequently Associated with Disease

(A) The proportion of disease-associated genes decreases for groups of genes of successively younger evolutionary ages. 2,231 genes do not have an age assignment, and of these, 310 (13%) are associated with human disease.

(B) Organ and time specificity of human genes with different evolutionary ages.

In (A) and (B), the youngest genes are those that are human specific (top), and the oldest are those shared across vertebrates (bottom). In parentheses are the number of genes in each age class.
