The endonuclease RNase E has a structured catalytic domain (residues 1–529) and an unstructured scaffold region (residues 530-1061). The latter possesses ‘microdomains’ that contain the binding sites for the DEAD box RNA helicase RhlB, the glycolytic enzyme enolase, and the 3’-exoribonuclease PNPase. Two RNA-binding regions flanking the RhlB binding site are also located within the scaffold region.
