Bacterial suspensions of S. aureus (top rows), E. coli (middle rows) or P. aeruginosa (bottom rows) were incubated on flat control (C, left column), NS (middle column) or NN (right column) surfaces for 3 h or 24 h. Following LIVE/DEAD stain, relative proportions of viable (green) or damaged (red/orange) bacteria were visualised and quantified. Scale bars, 40 μm.
