Running-induced proliferation and neurogenesis rescues the hippocampal injury-induced learning deficit. Runners with more BrdU-positive cells or BrdU-positive cells co-expressing NeuN in the dentate gyrus of vehicle-injected (a–b) and ET-1-injected (c–d) hippocampi were better able to learn and received fewer shocks on the final testing day of APA3 (mean ± SEM, n = 8/group; paired t-tests, comparing ET-1-injected and vehicle-injected control hippocampi of the same animal, and unpaired t-tests comparing treatments.
