Number of replicate tubes subjected to PMSA showing rec-PrPres by electrophoresis and total protein staining/total number of replicates. Presence of rec-PrPres indicates incomplete inactivation of the rec-PrPres adsorbed to the surface of the beads. t2 refers to the shortest PMSA reaction time in which rec-PrPres was detected in the absence of any decontamination treatment but propagation has not reach a plateau, and t3 refers to the shortest PMSA reaction time in which rec-PrPres signal was considered to have reached plateau which is considered to be the maximum propagation limit. The numbers in parenthesis show the mean ± SD, excluding those cases for which SD was 0. Statistically significant differences with respect to untreated controls are also indicated with the following symbols: ×p < 0.05, ××p < 0.01, and p < 0.001.
