Relationship of time to surgery (TTS) and hazard ratio of death by tumor subsite. Hazard ratio is shown by tumor subsite in the unadjusted, adjusted M1 (partially adjusted for surgical margins and tumor stage only), and adjusted M2 (fully adjusted) models. The oropharynx subsite showed greater mortality when surgery was performed beyond 30 days, whereas the oral cavity subsite showed greater mortality when surgery was performed beyond 60 days. Control for surgical margins and tumor stage in the oral cavity subsite caused a 50% reduction in hazard ratios for TTS in the partially adjusted model
