Among these, HSV-1 and HSV-2, representing the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae and genus Simplexvirus, are indistinguishably associated with keratitis. The third human herpesvirus in this subfamily, varicella-zoster virus, of the genus Varicellovirus, is another cause of corneal infection.
