The E. coli wt (BE1000) (black circles) (A-C), ΔsufABCDSE (AG031) (white diamonds) (A), ΔiscUA (AG030) (white squares) (B) and ΔsoxR (AG035) (white triangles) (C) strains were grown overnight in LB and inoculated (1/100) in fresh LB medium. The cultures were grown to an OD₆₀₀ of 0.2 and were each split into two flasks, PMS (30 μM) was added (time zero) in one, and the other was left untreated. All cultures were further incubated at 37°C and growth was monitored by following OD₆₀₀. The growth curves of the wt strain are the same in each panel. The experiments were repeated at least three times. The means and standard deviations are shown.
