Structure of PIA. PIA is a homopolymer of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) residues with β-1–6 linkage. About 15 to 20% of the GlcNAc residues are de-acetylated. In the figure, acetyl groups are in green and the free amino group that results from IcaB-catalyzed deacetylation, which is positively charged at neutral or basic pH, is in red.
