MERCs support synaptic activity in three sides: presynapse, postsynapse, and astrocyte. The implication of MERCs into supporting the active neurotransmission is connected with changes in calcium and lipid homeostasis, mitochondrial dynamics in pre- and postsynapse, due to the effects of SIGMA1R (shown as a blue star symbol) on ionic currents and membrane receptors. Dopamine D1 receptors – D1R, small conductance Ca²⁺-activated potassium channels – SK, NMDA-receptors – NMDAR.
