Categorization of fire-related homicides by common causes of death and associated circumstances. Cases could typically fall into several distinct categories, with arson/dwelling fires being the most common circumstance. Most cases of fatal trauma either had evidence of elevated COHb or prolonged survival, suggesting that true postmortem immolation is rare.
