Backscatter volume strength (SV) in dB obtained during the Malaspina Circumnavigation Expedition using the Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (LADCP) attached to the rosette sampler. Red line in the upper panel shows the Circumnavigation journey. Observe the deep scattering layer (DSL) all along the transect around 500 m depth, the almost absence of DSL in the oxygen minimum zone of the Pacific Ocean, and the global increase in backscatter at bathypelagic depths below areas of higher productivity approaching the continents (vertical dashed lines) and equatorial upwelling zones. The distance in the x-axis are the km from the beginning to the end of the transect.
