A z-score represents the difference between the mean change in expression for a subset of genes in a category and the population mean in units of standard error. A z-score < 0 represents downregulation and a z-score > 0 represents upregulation of the respective functions. Significance is measured by log₁₀  p-value, representing the probability that a z-score for a given category occurs by chance, with a threshold of log p < −1.301.
