  • Being grossly underweight (<80% ideal body weight).

  • Being grossly overweight (>120% ideal body weight).

  • Recent weight loss (>10% over 3 months).

  • Being alcoholic/substance dependent.

  • Nil permouth for >5 days.

  • Increased nutrient losses.

  • Malabsorption.

  • Short bowel syndrome.

  • Fistulae.

  • Draining abscesses or wounds/burns.

  • Renal dialysis.

  • Increased nutrient requirements.

  • Trauma.

  • Burns.

  • Sepsis.

  • Taking medication with anti-nutrient properties.
