Supplemental Figure S1

Lymphatics and smooth muscle in whole lungs after bleomycin treatment. Entire left lung of C57BL/6 prospero homeobox 1-enhanced green fluorescent protein (Prox1-EGFP) mice stained for smooth muscle (red; α-smooth muscle actin) and lymphatics (green; Prox1-EGFP) at baseline (no bleomycin; A) or 14 days after bleomycin treatment (B). Lymphatics in the normal lung have a distinctive distribution around large airways and blood vessels and are especially numerous around pulmonary veins, but are sparse in the lung parenchyma and absent in the visceral pleura. By comparison, after bleomycin challenge, lymphatics are much more abundant and widespread in the lung, including the lung parenchyma and pleura. Prox1-EGFP–positive cardiac muscle cells around large pulmonary veins have weak green staining. Scale bar = 1 mm (A and B).
