Simulation time courses of populations comprised of all 10 genetic backgrounds and males (red), and females (blue) in equal proportion, where the index case of an outbreak is an individual of a specific genetic background and sex (simulation experiment no. 2). Across all of these simulations, other parameters are fixed: threshold radius (r) = 15 mm, transmission efficiency (τ) = 1 and scaled infectiousness (η) = 2. A random forest analysis was used to determine the relative importance of genetic background and sex to each summary statistic used to describe outbreak dynamics (electronic supplementary material, figure S2).
