Social isolation alters Egr-1 staining in a sex- and brain region-specific manner. Isolated female prairie voles had significantly higher levels of Egr-1 in the NAcc. Social isolation was associated with lower Egr-1 levels in the DR. Females had higher Egr-1 levels in the DR, but lower Egr-1 levels in the DG and in the PVN compared to males. Egr-1, early growth response protein 1, NAcc, nucleus accumbens, DR, dorsal raphe, DG, dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Bars indicate mean ± SEM. * represents a main effect of sex, p < 0.05. # represents a main effect of treatment, p < 0.05. Bars with different letters differ significantly from each other.
