(a) Cell trapping mode where dgap is smaller than the radius of the cells and all the cells are trapped within the micro-vortices; (b) cell release mode where dgap is comparable to the radius of the cells, which allows one-to-one encapsulation; (c) dgap is comparable to the radius of blood platelets that are released whereas RBCs and WBCs are trapped within the micro-vortices; (d) by increasing dgap, platelets, RBCs and WBCs are released in ascending order of their sizes.
