Rotating shifts: The risk of breast cancer may be proportional to the number of consecutive night shifts worked. Risk increases in permanent night shifts and long-term day-night rotating shifts. Light at night and melatonin levels have not been significantly associated in this study. Although the number of epidemiological studies is somewhat limited and further research is needed, evidence suggests that exposure to light during night shift work may increase the risk of breast cancer. Several potential mechanisms of action have been proposed: melatonin suppression, clock gene expression, sleep disruption, lifestyle factors, and lower vitamin D levels. |
