Protrudin regulates endosome maturation at ER-endosome MCSs in neurons and thereby maintains neuronal integrity. Protrudin interacts with VAP, PDZD8, and Rab7 at ER-endosome MCSs, at which lipids are transferred from the ER to endosomes in a manner dependent on the SMP domain of PDZD8, resulting in endosome maturation.
