Tregs suppress CD8 T cell and NK cell activation, providing a permissive environment for tumor growth (upper panel). After Tregs are selectively depleted by NIR-PIT, CD8 T and NK cells are activated against the tumor (middle panel). Activated CD8 T and NK cells can also leave the treated tumor to attack distant tumors, accompanied by released cytokines and chemokines (lower panel).
