Table 2.

Teaching points

  • Among affected patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, intracranial aneurysms can be present, although it is less commonly seen when compared with patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

  • Intervention upon cerebral aneurysms is not without risk, and the decision to pursue this approach should be tailored to the individual patient. The size, number, and anatomic location of the aneurysms affect this decision and a multidisciplinary team should be involved in all management decisions.

  • Consideration should be given to screening patients with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease given the potentially catastrophic consequences of intracranial aneurysm rupture in this young population.
