a Populations of Pseudomonas fluorescens were pre-adapted to grow in compost in the presence (+ nmc) and absence (− nmc) of the natural microbial community. After 6 weeks, clones were isolated and frozen. b Isolated clones were assembled into different levels of diversity (1–24 clones) and different pre-adaptation histories and left for another 6 weeks in compost alongside the natural microbial community to investigate how pre-adaptation changes the effect of a focal species on the resident microbial community.
